Laughter and Bioengineering

Have you ever wondered why humans laugh? One group has tickled rats, listened to babies, and investigated an outbreak of laughter in Tanzania to discover the answer. Listen to the podcast here (If this file doesn't work, find the podcast on the original blog).

If you're not laughter prone, this little jingle by a MIT research team may help. The team calls themselves "bioengineers." They make changes in and build living things, using organic chemicals, and have a goal to create life from non-life. For example, they added a strand of DNA to an E. coli bacteria and granted it a wintergreen smell. The MIT team is also attempting to create bacteria that absorb carbon dioxide and others that produce diesel fuel using sugar. Listen to it! Laughter makes us human and separates us from all other organism.

Ok so how would making E. coli smell like wintergreen help us detect it in our food unless they are just talking about making it smell that way so that they could mess with it and do experiments without it stinking them up.

They changed the smell of the E. coli so that they wouldn't have to deal with its repugnant odor while working with it in the lab. No practical use, really.
